Another point to note is that Eomer Eadig (along with Eorl) has much the same relation to Gondor as Audoin did to the Byzantine Empire, which Tolkien bore in mind while developing the history of Gondor. So the Eomer/Elfwine and Audoin/Alboin pairs seem to match almost perfectly.
